At the start of December the Moorhen team flew out to Florence alongside a member of Broadley Studios to work on an event for Medscape Live! The event was a virtual conference with two speakers being present in Florence with us, as well as two other speakers joining the conference, one from the US where the livestream was being put out from and the other in Holland, simply joining via zoom.
The client wanted to keep the setup simple but professional and also to fit with the setup that the crew in the US had. With two speakers present, we opted for a two camera setup. One camera was used as a wide shot to capture the two in-person speakers and the monitor we had set up to display the two remote speakers. The other was used for close-ups on our two speakers.
Due to the event being abroad, we had to consider what equipment to take carefully. We didn’t want to have to take any kit that was too large or bulky as transporting via plane would be difficult. Because of this we made the decision to use Sony FX30s on this job. These cameras are perfect for this kind of shoot as they are small and portable, yet still capable of shooting in up to 4K resolution and provide a picture quality suitable to go straight out on stream without any additional colour correction needed.
With small cameras we also chose to use compact tripods, choosing Peak Design’s Travel Tripods exactly for what they’re designed for! Some compact Rode Lavalier mics, a few laptops, an Atem Mini and lots of cables completed the setup and all in all we were able to pack a professional livestream setup into three bags suitable for cabin luggage and transport it across to Italy.
Broadley additionally supplied a backdrop (matching the one used by the team in the US) and some lighting equipment. The only thing we didn’t source ourselves were the monitors we used, however we were able to make use of ones already in the venue.
We made use of three monitors for this livestream. One, as mentioned, was used to display the two remote speakers alongside the two in-person ones on the live stream. The other two were used as comfort monitors for our presenters. The first was placed just below the wide camera and was used to display the slides they were presenting, the second was placed just off to the side and displayed the remote speakers again, so that the presenters could more easily see their co-speakers, whilst still appearing natural on-screen.
As the livestream wasn’t output by us but rather the team in the US, we simply sent our feed to them and that was our job sorted. Both the client and ourselves were really pleased with the end product, providing a stream that felt consistent despite working across so many countries and we in particular were pleased with how we were able to provide that using such a condensed kit.
