Filming funerals and memorial services – how does it work?

These days it’s often the wish of family and friends to capture the visual and audio memory of their departed loved ones at their funeral or memorial service. They want to save & share it as a celebration of their life.

Here at Moorhen Media we have years of experience filming and live-streaming all kinds of events. Over the past year, we’ve been making use of these skills and expertise to help people live stream their loved one’s funeral to family and friends, wherever they are located.

Sometimes it can be a good thing to think differently about life and death

It’s becoming more & more common to record or live-stream funeral and memorial services. Recording or filming a funeral can be useful in more than one way:

  • Saving the memory – it can be a wonderful way to remember and celebrate the life of the deceased
  • Sharing the love – as it allows people who are unable to attend the funeral in person to still be part of the event remotely
  • Keeping a record – so that you have documented the event for possibly legal or historical reasons
  • Inclusion – sharing the recording with those who couldn’t attend in person can provide comfort as well as a sense of closure

Some people want the funeral or memorial service to be private, some would like to share it with all four corners of the globe. It is important that the team behind the filming are diplomatic, considerate, respectful and law abiding when filming these events. It’s all about knowing what the family of the deceased want and communicating clearly with them.

Changing perceptions

Last year the inspirational Kris Hallenga, founder of Coppafeel, a breast cancer charity and someone who was living with terminal cancer, hosted her own FUNeral as she wanted to be there in person for her final party. It was videoed, streamed, presided over by none other than Dawn French as the FUNeral “vicar” and fully documented for Kris and the family and friends she has now left behind.

Amongst all the incredible things Kris did in her life, her FUNeral helped to change a lot of perceptions around funerals. It was a celebration of her life, that she herself could enjoy and take part in, whilst also preserving a moment that her family and friends could look back on in the future. Media coverage of the FUNeral, such as that from Church Times, has opened up conversations about a different approach to saying goodbye to your loved ones.

Catering to your needs

Here at Moorhen Media, we pride ourselves on our ability to connect and communicate with all our clients so that they get exactly the type of live streaming and audiovisual skills and support that they asked for at any of our events. We are always mindful of the friends, guests, colleagues and attendees at the funeral and are sensitive at what is a very emotional time for everyone involved.

Our compact and discreet equipment setups are ideally suited to filming funerals and memorials. Rather than making use of huge TV style cameras, large tripods and masses of messy cables, we instead use small, DSLR-style cameras and compact, lightweight tripods that are easy to keep out of the way and don’t divert attention away from the importance of the day.

Smaller, more compact equipment doesn’t mean lesser quality. Despite appearances, our cameras are 4K, cinema-line cameras, with 26-Megapixels, so that we can capture the day with professional clarity.

Using our wide-ranging experience of working on live events, we’re used to every scenario. We’ll seamlessly integrate with whatever equipment the venue already has in place to ensure a smooth experience both in the room and online.

We will also provide a transcript of any comments or messages sent by those watching online so that you can have them to keep for the future.

Words from a funeral client

Last year we received an email from Corinne, asking if we could film a funeral two days later. We spoke on the phone & took the details of the service venue, who we then contacted. As it was very short notice we organised everything online & on the phone with them as there was no time for a venue visit.

A contact at the venue helpfully sent some photos of what equipment was already in place (a PA system with microphones and a small wi-fi router). Making use of these photos, we put together a kit list to cover all possible eventualities, ensuring that we would be able to provide the livestream no matter what issues we encountered.

On the day we arrived bright & early at the venue in order to get everything setup in time for the service and preempt any complications. We set up with both the venue’s equipment and our own in place as a back-up. Everything worked perfectly.

The live stream went very smoothly & was a great success. The family both in London & watching from around the world, were very grateful for our services that meant they could be part of the live service, no matter where they were.

"I’d like to say on behalf of my family that Moorhen Media come highly recommended. Not only did they produce superb and such high quality work, they were able to help us out at the very last minute. We cannot recommend this team highly enough!! Everyone who watched the live steam and the recorded film have commented on the crystal clear picture quality. Top work guys. Professional at every step - From the Brief right through to Delivery. For such an incredibly sensitive and important event you guys were a dream to work with. Thank-you so very much."
